August 2024: What’s New in Safety & DOT Compliance
Safety enforcement events and roadside inspections are always at their height during the summer season.
As we continue to enjoy summer vacations and the warmer weather, it's important to remember safety and DOT compliance never stop. This month, we're reminding you of IFTA filings, driving sober campaigns, and Brake Safety Week.
2nd Quarter IFTA Filings Due on July 31, 2024
This is an important reminder that second-quarter IFTA filings were due July 31, 2024.
Remember, the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a tax collection agreement in the US and Canada. It aims to make it easier for truckers and trucking companies to pay taxes on fuel.
Are you struggling with keeping track of your fuel purchases? Foley knows IFTA inside out! Let us help you navigate it.
The next IFTA filing deadline is October 31, 2024, which will be here before we know it.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over: August 16 – September 2, 2024
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is an annual enforcement event aimed at preventing impaired driving among motorists and truck drivers.
This year, it goes into effect across the country from August 16 to September 2, 2024. During this time, law enforcement steps up their efforts in searching for drunk drivers — all in the hopes that these increased efforts will serve as a deterrent as well.
According to the NHTSA, one person is killed about every 39 minutes in a drunk-driving crash. That amounts to more than 13,000 people each year. The timing of this annual event is no coincidence, either. Sadly, drunk-driving deaths tend to increase over Labor Day weekend.
Now is an excellent time to make sure you’re up to date with the latest DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations. This Foley article is a great place to start.
Brake Safety Week: August 25 – August 31, 2024
This week-long enforcement initiative kicks off on August 25 this year. The sponsor of the event — the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)—notes that during this week “commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections (primarily Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify brake-system violations.”
Don’t let the name “Brake Safety Week” fool you, however. While the emphasis is on brake systems, inspectors will be conducting full roadside inspections during the event. Here’s what you can expect.
