CVSA Safe Driving Week Dates Announced
MAY 13, 2019 – The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced the dates for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week. This year’s event will be held from July 14-20, 2019 with a focus on speeding.
During last year’s Safe Driver Week, speeding was the second most common violation for CMV drivers and passenger vehicle drivers alike with almost 19,000 citations issued during the week. This, combined with the following statistics, prompted the CVSA to make speeding the focus of this year’s enforcement event:
-
- In 2017, speeding was a contributing factor in 26 percent of all traffic fatalities (NHTSA)
- According to the FMCSA’s 2016 Large Truck and Bus Facts, speeding was the most frequent driver-related crash factor for both CMVs and passenger vehicles.
Beginning on July 14, law enforcement officials throughout the country will be on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, texting, operating a motor vehicle without a seatbelt, improper lane change and aggressive driving. The goal, is to bring greater awareness to common unsafe driving practices so that our roadways are as safe as possible.
“As unpopular as traffic citations are among drivers, we know that driver behavior does respond to contacts with law enforcement and warnings and citations,” said CVSA President Chief Jay Thompson of the Arkansas Highway Police. “Roadway safety is our top priority and this traffic enforcement initiative supports our goal of making sure everyone driving on our roadways is doing so safely.”
The annual event is sponsored by the CVSA in partnership with the FMCSA. If you have any questions about Operation Safe Driver Week, or would like to learn more about the events in your area, you can use this list to call or email your state’s law enforcement agency.
