January 2025: What's New in Safety & DOT Compliance

What DOT compliance updates does January 2025 have in store for the transportation industry?

The new year is officially in full swing, which means it's time to find out what new safety events and DOT compliance requirements are coming up.

2025 UCR Enforcement has Begun

If you haven't filed your Unified Carrier Registration for 2025 yet, you should do so as soon as possible. The enforcement period for this federal requirement began on January 1.

The UCR is a federal agreement that requires businesses that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce to register within their operating state and pay a fee based on the size of their fleet.

Updates to the FMCSA Crash Preventability Determination Program

The FMCSA’s Crash Preventability Determination Program (CPDP) now evaluates 21 specific types of crashes and adjusts the information in the Agency’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) to identify crashes that were not preventable.

If you or a driver were involved in an eligible crash on or after December 1, 2024, you can submit a Request for Data Review (RDR) along with the required police accident report and any supporting documents, photos, or videos through the FMCSA’s DataQs system.

Crashes determined to be "Not Preventable" through the CPDP are not included in the Crash Indicator BASIC calculation in the FMCSA’s SMS. However, they are still listed on the website and noted in the FMCSA’s Pre-employment Screening Program (PSP).

Private Fleet Management Institute - PFMI 2025

The Private Fleet Management Institute’s annual event, PFMI 2023, will take place in Orlando, Florida. For five days beginning January 18, attendees will have a chance to participate in intensive educational programs and courses in fleet finance, operations, legal, regulatory, and safety compliance, human resources, maintenance, and equipment.

Heavy-Duty Aftermarket Week - HDAW 2025

The largest gathering of independent heavy-duty aftermarket industry professionals in North America will take place January 22-25 in Grapevine, Texas, outside of Dallas. Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week ’25  offers invaluable networking opportunities with top industry executives of all major heavy-duty manufacturers and distributors, sessions featuring industry experts, and a Product Expo that gives an exclusive view of the latest products in the heavy-duty aftermarket.

Society of Automotive Engineers Government/Industry Conference

The highly anticipated annual SAE Government/Industry conference will take place from January 28-30 in Washington, D.C., and provide government, regulatory, and policymakers in the automotive industry a neutral forum to discuss the effects of government regulations, new and upcoming technologies, and consumer expectations on vehicle design.

Jump Start

The supply chain is always in the news these days, and it will also be the hot topic at Jump Start, a three-day supply chain event that targets carriers, shippers, logistics service providers, and technology providers. Set to take place January 27-29 in Atlanta, Georgia, this is the definitive intelligence-gathering event in the industry and offers “unrivaled networking opportunities” to kick off 2025.
