Mandated FMCSA Portal Security Updates Now in Effect
FMCSA-regulated companies must act now to keep their portal accounts active and secure.
Cybersecurity is a growing concern in various industries, including transportation and logistics. The Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT) recently experienced the impact of a cyberattack, causing significant disruptions to its website and creating confusion for users.
In response to the increasing prevalence of cybersecurity breaches, the Biden administration has mandated multifactor authentication (MFA) for all federal agencies.
To comply with this mandate and enhance security, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has implemented updates that affect motor carriers and transportation companies. Users of the FMCSA portal must update their login information by creating a new account with Login.gov and setting up an additional layer of security. Access to the FMCSA portal is now only available through the creation of this new account.
Additional information about the new account creation process is available here.
Changes to FMCSA Clearinghouse Accounts
These security measures may also impact how motor carriers access their FMCSA Clearinghouse accounts, potentially requiring separate logins for different portals.
If your company accesses your FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse account through the FMCSA portal, your login will remain the same; however, if you access it separately, you will now have two separate logins.
Additional Federal Security Provisions on the Horizon
The FMCSA isn't the only federal agency making this security shift. All federal agencies must comply with the recent cybersecurity mandate, meaning those that have not already implemented changes will soon be required to roll out stricter security protocols and MFA.
