DOT NUMBER
Who Needs It?
If you are operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle in Interstate commerce (crossing state lines), you will need a DOT Number. You will also need a DOT Number If you are operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle in Intrastate commerce (staying in one state) in the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

OPERATING AUTHORITY
Who Needs It?
If you are operating a for hire Commercial Motor Vehicle in Interstate commerce, you will need to get Operating Authority from the Federal Government. Operating Authority is sometimes known as an MC Number. Note: If you need an MC Number, you will also need a DOT Number (see above), a BOC-3 (see below) and a UCR (see below).

UNIFIED CARRIER REGISTRATION
Who Needs It?
The Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) is a registration number and fee for vehicles crossing state lines. It is based on the number of vehicles that you have. It pays for enforcement activity. The UCR is paid each year by calendar year (Jan-Dec). This means that if you purchase a UCR in November, you will need to purchase another one by January for the following year.
